The Government have decided to spend a few thousand pounds on wind barricades, to fence in tlic Rimutaka railway, so as to prevent future accidents. EXODUS OP LABORERS. Wellington, Friday. The Hero cleared for Sydney to-day, taking with her about 70 Wellington laborers. The police had difficulty in bringing off her many stowaways. SUICIDE. Hokitika, Friday. This morning a carter named George Rowley committed suicide at Hokitika. MAORIS TALK WAR. Wellington, Friday, Information received here says the Maoris express surprise at Te Whiti not declaring war before this. They say the 12th of this month was lixed for the rising. OFFICIAL BLUNDERING. Invercargill, Friday. At the town of Lowther, near Invercargill, the postmaster being a storekeeper acts gratuitously. Nevertheless he has been served with notice of ten per cent, reduction in his salary ! THE REVENUE. Wellington, Friday. The returns of colonial, revenue and expenditure are to hand for last quarter. They show the receipts are £782,388, and the expenditure £892,012, leaving a deficiency on the quarter of £101,165. SPECULATION. Wellington, Friday. Business here is slack, consequent on so many small failures recently; yet money is plentiful. The prospectus of another morning paper for Wellington is issued, not publicly, but sub rosa.
OUTRAGE. Gisborne, Friday. A horrible outrage has been committed at this [dace on a little girl three years old. The police are on the track of the miscreant at Napier.
