The Government having failed to pay rent for using the Good Templar Hall as a Court-house, a bailiff was put in possession of Court properties on Saturday. The difficulty arose through a round-about method of keeping accounts, and the off-hand style in which the company’s claim was treated. They have had their revenge. LOVE AND REVENGE. Wellington, Monday. A strange case of drowning occurred here on Sunday evening. John Wood Lunt, a native of Liverpool, was picked out of the water near the wharf. An inquest has been held on the body, and two love letters from a barmaid at the Star Hotel were found. Verdict of temporary insanity. REDUCED FARE TO EUROPE* Auckland, Monday. The Pacific Mail Company notify a reduction of saloon fare to Europe, the price to be L 67. GOLD MINING. Reefton, Monday. The City of New York, with London mails, left San Francisco on the 28th ult. The Zealandia, with August Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the Bth hist. BURNED TO DEATH. Christchurch, Monday. Last evening a cottage at the Asylum was accidentally burned, and two children perished therein. OUTWARD SHIP. Dunedin, Monday. The ship Dunedin from Glasgow to Dunedin, with 214 nominated immigrants, sailed on the 3rd instant. NATIVES AND LAND JOBBING. Wellington, Monday Night. All the natives who own land up the Wanganui river have assigned it over in trust to Major Kemp. A conference of natives was hold at which 600 were present. Te Pune, chief of the Upper Wanganui, was also there. FOOTBALL. Auckland, Monday. A football match between the Wellington and Auckland teams was played here on Saturday. The Auckland team won. A banquet was given, at which speeches were made, and good-will prevailed. SHIPS ARRIVED. Wellington, Monday, The fine ship Waimea was towed into port on Saturday night, with only a few passengers. The Stirlingshire, from Glasgow with pipes for the Wainui-Omata waterworks, also arrived here yesterday.

In Sydney, beer and syrup is the “ fancy drink,” A waiter at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York, has often 500 hats under his charge at one time.
