HAWERA.

[f ROJI OUR COKIIESI’ONDENI.I BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. The firing for the handsome cup presented by the officers of the Hawcra Light Horse, took place on Saturday. The wind was rather strong across the target, and this may account for tho poor scores made. Mr G- Bayly was the successful man, but he will have to win tho cup twice ere it becomes his property. I append the scores :

After the firing, the usual monthly parade of the troop took place ; there was a fair attendance, and tho men were put through sword exercise on horseback. The cricket club intend to play their opening match on Saturday, Sept. 25th; the eleven playing 22 all-comers. The Variety Troupe paid Hawcra a visit on Friday and Saturday, but they were not well patronised, which surprised nobody but themselves. We have had too much of these dark-skinned gentry during tho year, this being their third visit. Sir Dillon Bell left on Friday morning for Wellington. He will probably return ere long. Mr Bryce left on Saturday for the camps. I presume he will wait there until after the Parihaka meeting of the 18th, to see what new dodge Te Whiti is going to try. The meeting will be unusually large, and many Maoris from the East Coast and Waikato will be there. At Cape Egmont 150 men are now stationed, under Major Goring. Major Tukohas the ramainder opposite Parihaka,

within about half-a-milo of the Prophet’s wbare. All the plans for the Waimate Plains survey have been completed in New Plymouth and forwarded to Wellington to be lithographed. They may be expected to be completed in a fortnight’s time. Wi Parata passed through here yesterday on bis way to Parihaka. He is a thorough believer in Parihaka counsels. *
