SALE OF THE PLAINS.

7,000 ACRES ON DEFERRED PAYMENT.

(Telegram from our Correspondent.) Wellington, Friday Night.

I am informed that the first portion of the Waimate Plains is to be offered on the deferred payment system. This will not exclude mere speculators, but it will involve the condition of improvement without compulsory residence. The Government may impose a condition of residence in order to have settlers actually on the Plains, and thereby supersede the necessity ot maintaining an armed force in that quarter.

I understand the Government have decided to put up 7,000 acres of the Plains to auction, at the upset price of £4: cash and £5 deferred payment. The sale is to take piace on the 25 th of October.
