ESCAPE FROM FIRE.

{Telegram from our Correspondent.)

Hawera, Wednesday. Whittaker’s large store had a narrow escape from being destroyed by fire last night. When bidding adieu to friends who were starting homewards, last night, Mr Whittaker and others noticed smoke coming thickly from underneath the passage. A board was at once removed, and flames issued from under the flooring, coming from the direction of the fireplace in the clrawinging room where the company had been sitting. Bricks were quickly removed, and the timber underneath was found to be all on fire. With great exertion the fire was subdued without serious damage except the flooring. The fire-place was found to be very defective in the construction. Had the flames got a hold, the destruction would probably have been immense, for the fire might soon have devoured one-half the town, including the two banks, as a strong south wind was blowing.
