A new method of garotting is reported from Melbourne. A man sauntering past a street corner at night was lassoed by a tribe of larrikins, who had thrown a slip noose over his head, and then dragged him up a bye-street. Tiie captive struggled ; the larrikins tugged and yelled with glee ; but “ the battle was to the strong,” and he proved strong enough to plant his feet against a stone, then pulling the rope from the lads, he swung it round, and lashed the rascals’ backs till their laughter turned to yelping. That must have been a lively experience. 561,607 sacks of flour have been exported from Lyttelton to the United Kingdom during the present season. The corresponding quantities from Melbourne were 536,431 sacks of wheat, and 70629 sacks of flour.
