(r uo m ou k coitnesp on de x t .")

Town Hall. —The present energetic committee are doing their utmost to forward the enlargement ot this building, and when all the proposed improvements are completed the Hall will be a boon to the district. The stage itself will be of such dimensions as to bo capable of accommodating any professional company who may be passing through the district, and there will be increased sitting room in the body of the building. Tho anteroom is intended for the members of the Institute, and it may also be used as a retiring room for ladies. The space or cellar below tho stage will be used for storing various articles. The Weather. —During the last week we have experienced very unpleasant weather. Strong south-easterly gales of piercing coldness, accompanied by heavy showers and occasional lightning, have been the order of the day. It is pleasing to record that no serious maladies have presented themselves among the community ; but there lias been a steady demand for pockethandkerchiefs and “ Irish Moss.” The Railway. —Much satisfaction is felt here at the starting ol this most important work. The sudden increase of population has already given a stimulus to trade, and it is to be hoped that now our town will make rapid progress. Stock Sale. —The usual monthly sale of cattle was held by Mr W. Cowcrn at the yards. A limited quantity of stock 'was presented, as is usually the case at this time of year. Eighteenmonths’ old steers realised £3 17s Gd to £4 2s Gd : mixed, £4 7s Od. No demand for milkers. Pigs wore competed for, throe months old fetching 12s Gd. No demand for horses. The. attendance, considering the state of the weather, was very fair. It is anticipated that a good business will be done about the middle of spring. The Patea AVcst Road Board met on Thursday.
