HAWERA.
BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAI Li Wednesday Evening. Mr Barlcyman has returned from Wellington, and although not crowned with the honors of conquest, I think his attendance and our action re the Taranaki Harbor Board will have resulted in some good. It will at least show the Board that their actions arc earnestly watched by this district, and that they had better mind their P.’s and Q.’s. The Board has all along seemed to consider that we had nothing whatever to do with the matter, except sharing in the immense benefits that are to accrue to the whole of New Zealand, and to Taranaki provincial district in particular, from the magnificent harbor scheme ; ignoring the fact that a very large area of our County is liable to the special rate, and that we lose 25 per cent, of our land revenue. Had they wished to have shown us fair plajq surely they would have had inserted in their Bill that at least one member should represent this district on their Board. Building is going on briskly at present. Several now houses arc going up, and carpenters’ prospects are a little brighter. It is understood that Mr Parris will be paying the natives in a few days about a thousand pounds, being balance of purchase money of a block that was put through at the Lands Court in Patca. Mr Hill, who has for some years fulfilled the position of schoolmaster at the Fovmnnby school, has resigned. I believe be has been offered and accepted a position as travelling agent for the Mutual Life Association. His many friends trust his new field of labor will bo beneficial in every sense. There is a good deal of sickness about at present. Mr Pritchard, our chemist, has been very ill for some time past, and I regret to say is no better, though Dr Richards has every hope of a favourable change in a day or so.
