WAIMATE PLAINS.
[r E 031 OUR COKRESPOSDK.NT.I Wednesday Evening. It is reported that the fencing operations at Parihaka have been knocked off, Tc Whiti having come to the conclusion that it is a losing game, and that if the arrests went on at the same ratio his male attendants would be very small in number at the September meeting. Humour says that after next monthly meeting, the 17th, he will try sonic new new dodge to worry the A.G.’s and vex the Government; but wbat that next move will be no pakeba bus the faintest notion. There lias been a good deal of discuscussion, since reading the second report of the Commissioners in the Maid, about the lavish way those gentlemen have dealt with lands of the Crown, in awarding to Maoris about three-quarters of the land in recompense, it would seem, for their tur. bulent and aggressive conduct. The giving away of the land would not matter so much if there was any reasonable hope that it will be occupied, but under the influence of Te Whiti, natives object to leasing their lands, and wo may, and no doubt will, see this magnificent strctchd|BH land locked up in the same state as heretofore.
