KELLY’S TBIAL. Melbourne, Friday. Ned Kelly is to bo put on his trial at Becchworth, on charges of robbery with violence, and one or more charges of murder; He will be defended by Mr David Ganson. Mr G-ladstone’s Illness. London, sth. Mr Gladstone, the Prime Minister, continues to improve. The congestion of the lungs is less severe, and the feverish symptoms have ceased, but he continues very weak. The public anxiety is less strained. COLONIAL MARKETS. Melbourne, Friday. Supplies of sugar are small, and sales arc progressing firmly at one pound higher. SHOOTING IN A THEATRE. Melbourne, Friday. Sonday, who was shot by Greer in the Opera House, in a lit of jealousy, is now recovered sufficiently to leave the hospital, AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TOUR. London, 4th. The cricket match Australians v. Gloucester Eleven was resumed to-day The Gloucester team went in for the second innings, and were all disposed of for 97 runs. The Australians thus won the match by 68 runs. In the second innings of the Home team, Spofforth took 7 wickets. PEERS AND IRISH TENANTS. London, sth. Sixty-three Liberal peers voted with the majority on the Irish Tenants Compensation Bill, in the House of Lords. MIDHAT PASHAREINSTATED. London, sth. Midhat Pasha has resumed the governorship of Syria, from which he had been deposed through the intrigues of the old Turkey party in the Government, Ho has also been appointed Governor of Smyrna. HOMEWARD MAIL. London, 5 th. The Homeward mails via San Francisco, which left New Zealand on Juno 22, were delivered here yesterday. THE AFGHAN CRISIS. Calcutta, oth. Messengers report having seen Ayoub Khan’s forces on Sunday, at Sangbar; but in consequence of having suffered heavy loss, Ayoub Khan hesitates making an attack on Candahar. No further intelligence regarding General Phayre’s advance. HOMEWARD SHIPS. London, 6tli.
