The weather on the Derby clay was all that could be desired. Royalty mustered in force. There were 20 runners. Betting at the start was 2 to 1 against Ben d’Or, 7 to 1 against Eobert the Devil, 20 to 1 against Mask. Ben d’Or won by a head only, after an exciting struggle with Eobert the Devil. Mask finished a dozen lengths off. Apollo was fourth. Time 2mins. 46secs. Stakes, £6375. Arche, rode the winner. There were thirteen runners for the Oaks, Versigny being the favorite at 6 to 5. The betting was—loo to 3 against Benny, 20 to 2 against Hewlett, 50 to 7 against Banner Morder. War Horse won by five lengths ; a head separated second and third. Time, 2min 49sec. Stakes, £4500.
Mr Gladstone’s indiscretion is proverbial It is said that his appointment of the Mar. quis of Ripon as Yicroy of India has made Mr Gladstone so unpopular in Scotland, the Marquis being a Roman Catholic, that ift the Midlothian election were to be foughr over again he would be defeated. The General Assembly of the Established 1 Church of Scotland, bya majoriiy of 115 to 52, has agreed to protest against the appointment.
