PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. TUESDAY, JULY 27, 1880. MAORI REPORTING.

The speeches of Maori M.H. R.’s are to be reported fn the native language, in a separate edition of Hansard, if the recommendation of the Reporting Debates Committee be carried out. This is hardly the time to increase the expensivencss of the official reports ; but the object aimed at is very desirable, only it should bo carried out in a proper manner. It is not enough to report Maori speeches for Maori readers: they should be informed •also'of what is said for and against the particular subject by Parliament as a whole. That could be done by printing in the Maori language a separate summary. of debates on subjects affecting the native race. Other subjects might be mentioned in brief, but no reporting in Maori should be attempted on subjects that do not directly concern the relations of the two races. It is not political wisdom to prevent all knowledge of political transactions from reaching the Maori race. We conceive it to be a serious public duly to endeavour, by such agency, to interest the natives on the West Coast in" other ideas than those which they arc accustomed to exchange in their whares.. Let them see that there are other considerations than those that they fancy, in their isolated ignoniiia', Lw constitute tbo oceonoo of native wisdom. Interest them in the great world outside their villages. Let them sec that Parihaka is not the centre of the universe.
