A meeting of settlers was hold at Owen’s Hotel on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of ‘‘ discussing the advisabloncss or otherwise of forming a separate county; and also as to whether in the event of such separation taking place, it would not be better that the County Council should perform alb necessary" road works within its boundaries.” Mr Livingstone was voted ;to the chair. After some discussion as to -the legality of .the meeting it was decided, after Mr Farrington had boon referred to, that the . business could bo proceeded with. Mr Moore Hunter proposed “ That ft is advisable to form a separate county, with the boundaries from Munawapou to the Tangatara rivers.” Other rcsolutipns were, proposed, one to the effect that the movement was premature, and that the discussion of the matter should be deferred until the occupation of the Waimate Plains; upon which one gentleman pertinently" remarked that if such resolution was carried, they would never sec a separate county here, as the Plains had been “ going to be” settled for the last 7 or S years, and from what be saw of the prospects they wore as tar off as ever. Ultimately : it was. resolved to adjourn the meeting for a month, and a, committee was formed to look into the whole question and to report to such adjourned meeting. There were about 30 settlers present, amongst whom was Mr F. J. Grano, of Whakamara. The discussion lasted for about two hours and a half, but was mostly carried on in a conversational manner.
At a meeting of the members of the Church of England, held on Saturday evening, the Rev. Mr Dasent being in the chair, Mr Perry reported that he had been promised £2OO. A committee was appointed consisting of the Rev. Mr Dasent, Messrs Hobbs and Perry, churchwardens, and Messrs Morecroft and his fellow vestryman. A letter was read from Mr Allan, of Normanby, offering a section in that township gratis, provided the committee would take the adjoining one at a fair price. It was resolved to erect a church on the site alloted by the Government. It was thought that the building would cost about £4OO. Mr Perry believed that certain gentlemen would guarantee the extra amount. The Hawera Light Horse paraded on foot last Friday in the paddock at the back of Lloyd’s Hotel. There was rather a poor attendance,;only about 30 turning up. Captain Lukis x»ut the men through the sword exercise for about an hour.
The Normanby Rifles paraded on Saturday. There was a fair muster. This corps: seems to be very efficient, and was on Saturday drilled, for the first time, by bug-le calls.' The Normanby people have responded so liberally to the proposal to erect a Town 'Hall, that : .the Provisional Directors have thought they are in a position to incorporate a company, and on Thursday night tendered 1 their resignations at a meeting of shareholders. A permanent directory was appointed, consisting, of Messrs G. E. jGibson, W.: Rowe, J. Robson, F. Hunger, B. Grey, arid C. H. Beresford. 238 shares have been applied for.
