Opposing Taranaki Harbor Expenditure.
ENQUIRY OF A SELECT COMMITTEE. (Telegram from our Cor respondent.) Wellington, Monday Night, A Select Committee of the Upper House has been appointed to enquire into a petition praying for the abolition of the Taranaki Harbor Board, and the consequent stoppage of the projected expenditure of £285,000 on a deepwater harbor in the open roadstead at the Sugar Loavesl ; ; The Committee held its first sitting to-day. -After examining hvo os three witnesses in support of the petition, the inquiry was adjourned till to-morrow. The result of to-day’s examination is the Secretary of .the; Taranaki Harbor Board has been ordered .to :come to Wellington immediately, and bring all books, copies of contracts,' and other documents relating to the business of the Board, in order that the Committee may thoroughly ascertain how much has been expended,, how much is intended or hkely to bo expended, on what authority the previous expenditure has been made, and the practicability of making a harbor at the Sugar Loaves for any reasonable sum... I observe the Chairman of the Patea Harbor Board is hero, busily promoting the proposed loan for Patea harbor improvements. OPINION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. ( Telegram from our Correspondent.) New Plymouth, Monday Night. The Herald , referring to Mr Barleyman going to Wellington,Wys : “ Why Hawera should be opposed to the harbor, we arc at a loss to imagine, seeing that the district cannot but benefit by it when completed ; but we congratulate Mr Barlcyman on his securing a visit to-Wellington during session time, free of cost ; and applaud the settlors; for their liberality'.
