News has been received from Cabul that an interview had been arranged between General Stewart and Abdul Raham, when the question of the latter’s acceptance of the Amcership of Afghanistan would be discussed. The work of demolition of the British forts at. Cabul having commenced, the British troops formed a camp near the city, where they will remain for the present. ANOTHER PRETENDER. CANDAHAR THREATENED. MARCH OF BRITISH TROOPS. Calcutta, 22nd, later. Important intelligence has been received from Candahar regarding the movements of Ayonb Khan, who was recently reported at Ferrah from Herat, with a large force, with the intention of attacking Candahar and wresting it from Shore Ali, the newly appointed rnlcr. It is now known that Ayonb is continuing his advance, and it is expected he will shortly attack the British camp at Girisk, on the road to Candahar, whither the British troops were despatched to support Shove Ali. There is great excitement amongst the Candahar tribes, owing to the continued advance of Ayonb Khan.

NEW PARLIAMENT IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, Friday. New Parliament opened yesterday. Mr Berry lias given notice for to-day of a vote of want of confidence in Mr Service’s Ministry. SYDNEY THEATRE BURNT DOWN. Sydney, Friday. The Victoria Theatre in Pitt-street was completely destroyed by fire last night; The fire broke out shortly after the performance closed. No lives lost, and adjoining buildings were saved.
Mr. J. C. Williamson, the proprietor of the opera of “ Pinafore,” has offered £IOOO for the best drama written by a colonial author. Bather an amusing story comes from Christchurch. A gentleman , attended one of the churches there last Sunday, and when the plate was put under his ,nose, he fumbled about in his waistcoat pocket, and at last produced a sixpence. This coin was put into the plate, but as the church official was about: to continue bis round, the man seized him ; by the arm, and with his other hand commenced to, turn over the coins, and at last found a threepenny piece, which he took possession of. Those who witnessed the affair were naturally much amused.
