TO THE “ MAILT WALKING TOURNAMENT. Christchurch, Friday. A walking tournament of four hours has been proposed, but it fell through. It is now arranged to hold a twelve hours’ handicap tournament on the 4th September, open to all comers. HEAVY BLASTING. Lyttelton, Friday. At the dock works to-day a charge of 22001bs was fired in one blast, to dislodge a cliff. A workman had his thigh broken soon afterwards, by the clay -falling on him. SAVAGE ASSAULT. Dunedin, Friday. Win. S, Goodison, cattle dealer, has been sentenced to twenty-eight days’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, for assaulting a publican named Moss with a loaded whip. REDUCING THE POLICE. Dunedin, Friday. The reduction in the police force has commenced here. Nine constables are reduced to third class, and sergeants are to grade as first-class constables, thus reducing their pay for the purpose of economy. '
