WELLINGTON PEICES. (From N. Z. Mail.) The business of the past .week has been of a retail character, buyers operating with extreme caution, and only for immediate requirements ; but, we are of opinion that this is a more healthy condition than the over-speculation of the past, and calculated to promote more confidence between buyers and sellers. The suspensions since our last have been of an unimportant nature. Captain Boscand, late, of the p. s, Samson, called a meeting of his creditors; and H. London, storekeeper, of -Poston,, who was adjudicated a bankrupt a few weeks back, had his first interview with his creditors on Tuesday last. His liabilities are stated to be £8099 65., and his assets are set down as £13,972, thus showing on paper a credit balance . of. £5273 ; the Colonial 'Bank proved on the estate for £BOOO. Mr. C. R. Forwood, solicitor, of Wellington, has filed his declaration of insolvency. Bank rates are unchanged, and monejis in fair supply for first-class freehold securities at from 8 to 10 per cent. Fencing wire is firm, and stocks have been replenished from Sydney. The Wakatipu landed about 50 tons. Sales have been made at £l7 to 19 10s. for Nos--0 to 8, known brands.

Ale and stout meet with fair share of business. The market for the former is rather bare, but there are good sized shipments to arrive, We quote—Tenncnt’s, lls.ifid. to lls. 9d.; Bass’s (bottled /by GrifEen), 12s. 3d. to l2s. 6d., and Bass’s bottled by Foster, 12s 9d. ' Candles very firm, and quotations are 9£d. for De Koubaix. Kerosene is very scarce, over test being unobtainable; under test is selling at Is. 9<l. ’ : ' Galvanised iron is in moderate demand, but prices are somewhat easier. Sugars are without alteration. Spirits.—A fair business has been don« in favorite brands, but we think prices are giving way a little. Hennessy’s case is quoted39s. to4os, and bulk, lls. tolls. 6d.; whiskey is in improved demand ; Lome’s case, 18s. 6J.; L.L., 225., and Dunville’s with full supply at 18s. Tea. —Until the arrival of new season we cannot expect any improvement in this line, stocks being so low. Potatoes are as low as we have have ever seen them, and the prices realised on the wharf last week viz 355. per tori, can hardly pay the labor of taking thern from the ground ; we, however, anticipate higher rates. While on this we should suggest to merchants, to make a trial shipment of potatoes to Fiji ; a total failure of the yam crop is reported there, and we learn that potatoes have sold.as high as £2O per ton. If this is correct it would leave a handsome margin to the producers. Babbit skins.—Wc hear of a sale of Kaikoura silver grey having boon made at 3s. 6d. per doz. These arc the same description of skins wc some little time back reported as having realised 6s. 6d, in London. NEW PLYMOUTH RETAIL PRICES. (Corrected by latest report), Buying. Sellug. s. d. s. d.
