Three tenders were received for constructing the new wharf on the town side, namely those of G. H. Dickson, £1723; W. Pell, Wanganui, £1806; Mace & Bassett, £1940. The Chairman made a farther statement as to the action he intended taking while at Wellington, for securing additional funds to carry on the harbor improvements, and laid before the Board certain plans, which were approved of.

engineer’s report. Mr Thompson reported:—“l have prepared plans and specifications for a cattle wharf at the foot of York-street. The front is on the low-water line laid down by Sir John Goode, and the general scheme is in accordance with the order in Council. Tenders will be in to-day for a length of about 100 feet frontage to the river, and 120 feet at the sides, together with a cattle yard and run well fenced in, and provided with every facility for the shipment of cattle. The river channel at the breakwater is much better and wider than I have ever found it before. The sea does not affect it at all, but the very heavy fresh—the greatest we have had for years—caused a slight subsidence at the outer point on the corner next the river; and in order to thoroughly protect the work in future I am placing about a dozen concrete blocks on the toe and sides of the slope, which will give it the desired protection, and not cause more than a week’s delay.” pilot’s report. The pilot reported:—“ There have been very heavy freshes in the river. The bar and channel are straight, with 13 feet on the bar, 23 feet at end of breakwater, and an average depth of 17 feet in the channel at spring tides. The width from breakwater to north spit is 139 feet. The vessels crossing the bar since last report have been 31, and 6 crossed at night. Would request that I be supplied with a good glass.” The Chairman was requested to attend to the last request, while at Wellington.
