Unemployed for Patea.
We have reason to believe that a party of unemployed arc being drafted to Patea, by the Government, to be occupied in opening up roads into the bush country. It is likely that they will be sent to open roads on one or other of the native blocks which have been purchased by the Government, and the claims to which arc now before the Native Lands Court at Patea. The so-called unemployed will have to be furnished with road-making and bushclearing tools, and they will have to be provisioned and lodged in tents. All this means money expended in the district ; and there will bo the prospective advantage of having native country made accessible to white settlers, thereby bringing a population and stimulating trade. We may reasonably expect also that when two or three dozen immigrants have been employed in clearing and road making for the Government, they will be so impressed with the attractions of this district as to settle here—most if not all—and may send for their families ere long.
