Bailway ■ Bicycle.—The Ashburton Mail says this new. machine of the Government is of American make, aud it is said can attain a speed of 10, miles an hour. It consists of a light frame capable of carrying two persons, with two wheels on one rail and one on the other. The wheels arc connected by a crank which is worked by both hands and feet. The principal motion is however given by the feet, the hands only gently pressing a sort of wooden slide with a back and forward motion like rowing. The machine works very easily, hardly any exertion being required when it is once in motion, and it will be very uscfnlfor railway officials to use in inspecting or repairing lines, as it is so light that if there were a break in the rails ora heavy flood or any other obstruction that would prevent an ordinary trolly going any further, the rider of the bicycle could put it on bis back and carry it round to the next piece of sound line.

A fight ensued with, the,result.mentioned.; Grow and Hartt are among the. killed. The situation looked serious at one lime, as the “stranger” element all over the country.were opposed to the rail road, and a settler was threatened; but 1 better counsels prevailed, and the railroad people, thoroughly alarmed, changed front, and receded from their position, offering the farmers better terms.
