TO THE “ MAIL." MYSTERIOUS. FIRE. (From our Correspondent.) Now Plymouth, Wednesday. Alexander’s house at the German settlement was burnt down on Sunday night. There is a mystery about the affair, and an inquest is to be held on it to-morrow. PROPERTY TAX PROTEST. Grahamstown, 29th. A public meeting was held last night to discuss the Property Tax, and the following resolution was carried—That this meeting considers the Act. an oppressive, unjust, and inquisitorial measure, and altogether unnecessary. LEAP OF A LUNATIC. Wellington, 29th. A woman named Jane Foley threw herself out of a window yesterday, and sustained severe injuries. She was found to bo raving mad, and was committed to the Lunatic Asylum. LARGE FIRES. Timnru, 29th. A grocery store on the main road, belonging to James Martin, was totally destroyed by lire this morning. The building contained a heavy stock of merchandise. The insurances are £1,400., The owner estimates the loss on the stock at £SOO over insurance. Dunedin, 29th, By a fire on Friday morning the store of Mr Brown, of Portobollo, was destroyed. The building was insured for £2,000. HOTELS OR CLUBS ? Invercargill, 29th, It is rumoured that two hotels in Southland, for which licenses have been threatened to be refused, will he opened as Working Men’s Clubs, the present proprietors acting as manageis. This evasion is said to be easily practicable in the present state of the law regarding Clubs.
