Wreck of the S.S. Wanganui.
The screw steamer Wanganui, has been wrecked at. Clarancc Heads, on a voyage from Sidney, and sunk after striking a reef. Up to three monthsaeo, she was on the line of trade in this colony from Dunedin to the Manakau, calling at intermediate ports, and was taken off by her owners, Messrs Houghton and Co., of Dunedin, to be transferred to the New South Wales trade. At the time of the wreck (from which all hands were fortunately saved except two) she was commanded by Captain Bayldon, who had charge of her whilst she was in New Zealand waters. The Wanganui will be remembered in the olden days of the now defunct Wanganui Steam Navigation Company, being then commanded by Captain Linklater. No particulars of the wreck have yet come to hand. The steamer is believed to have been insured for £3500 in the National Office of New Zealand,
There is considerable distress in Mayo Ireland. 'Hie men demand immediate releif for themselves and families, and threaten that if this it not provided ( they. will pillage the country, and take py violence all they can lay hands on.
