WHICH IS SABAH?

It is not long since Loudon was ringing with the cry, Which is Sarah ? Some colonial papers have announced that the Sultan of Turkey had taken Sarah into his confidence. Sarah was to bo his political maid-of-all-vvork, his Grand Vizier. Who is this Sarah ? There was that famous Sarah from Paris who recently turned the beads of London society' ; she was a prodigy of feminine cleverness. Sarah Bernhardt was the premier tragedienne of the day ; famous also as a painter, a sculptor, a musician, and a flirt. Sarah was a walking sensation ; and when she smiled she - showed the prettiest teeth in Christendom. Perhaps they were false—who knows ? Can it be tins famous iittle Frenchwoman, this “ divine Sarah,” that the cablegrams announced as the Sultan’s new Grand Vizier ? They said it was Sarah, and she is the only Sarah who could cook the Saltan’s accounts, supervise his harem, manage the Eastern Question, take charge of his army, direct his fleet, and coddle his gout. No other Sarah is sufficiently “ many-sided” to manage all these things. Perhaps the clever little woman had got tired of painting and “ sculpting,” and of acting on the stage amid a hurricane of bouquets ; and in an idle hour she may have thrown her cap at the turban’d Turk, and hit him in a soft place. Accidents will happen. The Sultan may have seen at a glance that she was just the girl for his money ; and one wife more or less is not a deadly sin with the Successor of the Prophet, who keeps his own keys. Sarah must have been making those sweeping changes at Constantinople: in fact the cablegrams said so. It must be Sarah who is again unsettling the Eastern Question ; and the Greeks have ordered 25 more big guns (on credit) to blow up Sarali. We should much like to know who this Sarah really is. Either it is the divine Sarah from the Comedie Frangaiae at Paris, 6r it’s no Sarah at all. A cablegram just to hand (a

special to the Mail) says the new Grand Vizier is-Abbedden Pasha, If that is so, and the nanie Abbedden looks suspicious, tell us what became of Sarah ? She is not a woman to be deposed without lotting the world know the reason why ?- It lies on the conscience of the New Zealand press than which non? is more veracious—to find out what has happened to Sarah. It was their Sarah, not ours. Now do tell us all about youv Sarah.
