Agricultural Show Ground.
We understand that the Patea Agricultural Association have, through their committee, had under consideration an offer of the lease of 300 acres of land; close to the town of Carlyle, as a a site for their annual shows. The Society resolved, at their annual meeting, to hold the shows at a permanent centre of the district; and Patea was deemed to be central and most suitable for the convenience of exhibitors from all parts. The committee met on Saturday, in the Carlyle Town Hall, to consider an offer from the trustees of a suitable piece of laud. It was explained that a lease for 21 years would be given, with compensation for improvements. A portion of the land could bo fenced, and substantial yards erected as a permanent show ground ; and the remainder of the 300 acres could be sub-leased in small paddocks, which would be likely to produce a good revenue, being so close to the town, and accessible from three directions. The committee viewed the ground, and being very favourably impressed with its convenience and general suitability, and considering the terms to be reasonable, they resolved to authorise the chairman to close with the offer. Mr Chapman has since written to the trustees accepting their proposal. The committee transacted other business relating to the next annual show. Two new members were elected to vacancies on the committee, namely, Mr R. Horner, Whenuakura, and Mr J. Paterson, Sandhills,. Garlyle. It is intedded, wo believe, to make the Society’s shows as varied as the products of the district will admit of. Floriculture will be a feature as well as Horticulture, until the district has developed in wealth and luxury sufficient to support a separate society for promoting flower shows. Special prizes are already promised in this department by Mr Chapman, president, and Mr H. F. Christie. Local industries will be brought into exhibition as part of the Society’s show ; including samples of wool, hides, leather, saddlery and harness work, shoemaking; carts and carriages; wrought-iron work, methods of horse-shoeing ; carpenters’ work ; and local industries generally. We believe that some members of the committee who had not been warmly disposed towards Patea as a permanent centre for these shows are now conciliated by the exceptionally suitable ground
which the society are securing by closing with the present offer. When the contract is complete we shall be able to say move of the ground.
