A FRIENDLY GRUMBLE.
The large contract for the Carlyle Railway section is exciting attention among many persons in this district who had hoped to be in a position to tender for it, but who find that the magnitude of the contract shuts . them out, unless they agree in batches to'tender on the cooperative principle. We cannot see any sufficient reason for the whole of this work being blocked in one contract. There are strong reasons wliy it should not. The tenders are to be in by the 28th, and this runs the time close to the date on which the vote for this Railway will expire. After the end of : June the vote lapses, and becomes subject to revision, and to the nameless risks attendant on &■ bankrupt Exchequer. A Colonial Treasurer who treats his friends in this way must expect a warm reception next time he comes canvassing at this end of his district. He puts us off till the last. Even then we run the risk of total failure of the Railway
vote which Parliament allotted for the completion of the Main Line through Patea County. This will not do, Sir. You must be more attentive to areasoanblo dischaige of your duties to Egmont district—to the Patea end as well as to beloved Taranaki.
