WAVERLEY.

[FROM OCR CORRESPONDENT,] Mrs McLeod was arrested on Sunday evening b}' Constable Burrow. This is one of those sad cases of a mother of a large family giving way to intemperance, and while under the influence of drink destroying everything that may come within her reach. Sympathy is felt for her husband and family, as the husband is well known as an industrious and honest man. She will appear before the bench at Carlyle; but the gaol does hot seem the proper place for such as she is, and she can be called a lunatic only when under (he influence of drink. Auction Sales. —Mr F. R. Jackson’s monthly sale took place on Friday. It was well attended, and the bidding ou the whole indicated a revival in prices. All the stock in the yard was sold, and sellers appeared pretty;well satisfied with the prices obtained, i The sale on 2nd July will give a fair idea of the present value of well-bred and ot her stocks, asMr Axnp’s herd is to be brought undorthc hammer.

Election. —The election of a member for the County Council takes place on Wednesday first. Mr H. F. Mason is reported to have retired in favour of Mr W. Milne, but such retirements are often more against than in favor of a candidate. The friends of Mr G. S. Bridge are bestirring themselves, and as far as influence ought to stand well. Neither gciitlevpß»t is apparently interesting himself, - since both have been in the Council, and before the ratepayers in other capacities, it is best to leave the poll to decide how public services are appreciated. The,man charged with stealing a ssddle at Waverley has been liberated on bail."
