PATEA MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1880. A ROAD CONTEST.
The Patea West Road Board elections have been watched with peculiar interest this being a pitched battle between largo run-holders and small settlers. The latter class have been clearing and taking np land in the bush, away back from the main road ; and they naturally want the bye-roads patting into good condition, which would involve a larger rate than the well-placed run-holders cure to pay. The bush settlers have been beaten this time, but let them t.iy again. We do not agree with the policy professed by those large holders who refnee to assist in doing for other settlers what was previously done for themselves. The Government helped them; let them help the late comers. The country must be opened up. A reasonably liberal roadrate for the purpose might bo laid, with’ out hurting the large holders, while it would greatly benefit the small settlers.. No must give and take in these matters. No district can live and prosper under the system of road administration which certain large holders are trying to force on Patea West. Wc do not believe that Hie commissioners who arc now elected will push their advantage to unreasonable lengths. They have an opportunity of conceding by grace what their opponents have failed to extort by right. Let the majority set an example of proper public spirit. :
