CARLYLE v. WAYERLEY. On Saturday these clubs met at Carlyle for the first time this season, and rarely will such an evenly contested match be witnessed as that which took place on the Recreation Ground, in presence of a large gathering of spectators, including a fair sprinkling of ladies. When the two teams ranged up it was difficult to say which had the advantage. Wavorley had most weight, while the home team were stronger in their back play. Before starling, it was agreed to count a win only if tries and goals wore obtained ; and neither being scored, the match was drawn very slightly in favor of the visitors, who scored two force-downs to one. At 3.30, T. Nicholson set the leather in motion, and W. Dasent promptly returned it. Then followed a succession of scrimmages at the Carlyle 25, the goal of the latter being severely threatened. Bad del cy, Dasent, and Heenan, however, each made good runs ami kicks, and play was in neutral territory when time was called. Couttskicked off in splendid style, and the ball being badly returned by the Wavcrley captain, the downfall of their goal seemed imminent. Norman made a useful run, but missed his drop, and immediately afterwards Nicholson was forced to touch behind. The ball was again set in motion, and Carlyle playing well together, it was sent over the goal line, but T. Nicholson avoided his opponents’ scoring a range by cairying the ball out smartly. C. Dasent then made a short run, counterbalanced shortly afterwards by one by Coutts, who was well tackled after be had passed the other Waverlcy backs. Thurston, backed up by Dyke, made the finishing run of this period, and play again terminated in the middle. In the third twenty the home team was really hard pressed, and though Heenan, Powell, and Kitchen made grand attempts to getaway, it| was ineffectual, ns the opposing forwards played with great energy, and evidently “ marked their men.” Thurston and Coutts had a severe maul in goal, but the younger player stuck gamely to the ball, and averted what would otherwise have been a defeat to his side. Nothing particular occurred afterwards, and time was called with the scrimmage in close proximity to the home 25 flag. On changing ends for the last time, each side appeared determined to fix a result on the game,' but though play was faster than ever, there was less scrimmaging. Dyke and Dasent, backs, had a few exchanges of long shots, Sangster made a good run, and Powell and F. Road were conspicuous for their excellent forward play. Heenan conveyed the ball a considerable distance, and finished with a useful drop, when time was called ; nothing decisive being credited to cither side. Carlyle played one man short.
The teams consisted of Waverlcy : Messrs T. Nicholson, captain, G. Nicholson, C. M. Norman, Thurston, G. Howie, W. Howie, Robinson, Sim, J. Dyke, 11. Dyke, W. Saugster, It. gangster, Barr, Albert Symes, and C. Dasent. —Carlyle ;—Messrs Coutts, captain, Turner, Baggett, W. Dasent, Powell, M. Byrne, Adamson, Baddeloy, Keenan, F. Head, Kitching, Sinclaire, 11. Chadwick, and Jones. Mr Seed, Bank of New Zealand, Waverlcy, and Mr Pringle, Carlyle, officiated as umpires for tbeir respective sides. A return match will bo probably paid at Waverlcy shortly. The next event is Carlyle v. Hawera, which may be arranged for the 19th June, at Hawera.
