TOWN BOARD.
A special meeting of the Carlyle Town Board was held last evening. Present— Messrs Milroy (in the chair), Taplin, Dale Adams, Aitchison, and Hovvitt. STRIKING A RATK. Proposed by Mr Aitchison, seconded byMr Dale, and resolved, “That a,rate of 9d in.the pound be made on all rateable property within the town, for the period commencing 28th day of May, 1880, and ending March 31st, 1881, payable in one instalment on July Ist, at the office , of the. Board.” •LEASE OF RKCRKATION GROUND. Mr Adams proposed, and Mr Howitt seconded, “ That the Board decline to grant Mr Boss’s application for permission to cut up the Recreation Ground into paddocks ; but the Board would be prepared to take over the lease, allowing Mr Ross the amount due for rent, namely £lB, as compensation for improvements, such offer to be accepted or otherwise in seven days from date.” Mr Dale : I am not in favor of giving Mr Ross power to sub-let this Recreation Ground into small paddocks, because that would cause a great deal of inconvenience to the public. But I consider we have
power under the lease to sub-let, as \vc have done in other cases. As to the £lB compensation, Mr Ross has had the pro perty in the market, and he knows it is a sort of white elephant. We are not anxious to take the lease off his hands, and if he can get more than the £lB for it, well and good. Mr Adams : Is there power in the lease to snb-let? The Chairman : He has no power to assign or sub-let, without leave. Mr Dale: Yes, we can give him power , © to do so. Mr Aitchison moved, and Mr Dale seconded, That the words “ have no power ” be erased, and the word “ decline ” be substituted. Agreed to. Mr Adams: I cannot adopt that as my resolution. After some conversation the original resolution, as amended, was agreed to. TENURE OV CRICKET GROUND, A committee had been appointed to enquire and report as to the tenure of that portion of the Recreation Reserve known as the Cricket Ground, but the commitleo’s report was not complete and ready for presentation. Mr Taplin moved, and Mr Dale seconded, That the committee be allowed till the next ordinary meeting to complete their report. Mr Taplin now asked the Board to state whether the committee’s duty included the question of the future management of the Cricket Ground. He said there was a difference in the com. mittee as to the scope of their enquiry. Mr Adams said no new instruction could be given to the committee at this special meeting. The committee might as well go into the future management of the breakwater, Mr Dale; I think it would bo fully within the power of the committee to make suggestions as to the future management. Mr Taplin: That is the view I take. The Chairman: I understand this committee was merely to report fully the nature, of the holding. But it would be very difficult to attempt recommendations as to the future holding of the ground. The resolution postponing tho committee’s report till next meeting was then adopted. This closed the business.
