Objections to Voters.

LEASEHOLD CLAIMS STRUCK OFF, Mr Eawson, registrar of electors, writes to us as follows : I think it would be well if you inforincd your subscribers that all those names on the Egmont Electoral lioil whose only qualification is leasehold or household, will be objected to by me, as the only qualifications recognised by the Qualification of ..Electors Act, 1879, are freehold and residential. Therefore those who will be objected fo should immediately forward me a freehold or residential claim, if they arc able to do so. The new Roll is being purged of improper qualifications; and as many voters on the old Roll arc disqualified when entered on the new Roll, by reason of the change in the electoral law, it becomes necessary to strike them off, or to amend the description under which they claim to be qualified. Holders of leased land and householders could claim under the old law. Now they must re-register, because that claim has ceased to be legal. Where they can now claim for a freehold worth £2o per year annual value in vent, they should send in a fresh claim for the freehold property. Where a leaseholder can now claim rceideutially, having been in the colony over one year, and resided in the Egmont electoral district over- six months, in any part of it, and counting the whole period as a continuous half year, such claim should bo sent i« afresh for a residential qualification. To leave the old leasehold or household claim on the Roll will result in the claim being struck ofl. Mr. Rawson will doubtless take care to send formal notice to every person whose claim he objects to, for the Act distinctly provides that no voter’s name shall be removed from the Roll unless and until that voter has been duly notified, so that be may bo able to defend bis claim or take steps to rc-rcgister. Forms of claim may be obtained and filled np at the Mail office. The Electoral Roll may also be inspected at the Mail office.
