It is alleged that Longhurst, who was sentenced to 10 years and two floggings last session for rape, received his first flogging in such a severe manner that he lias been in a stale of prostration' ever since : serious consequences have supervened, and the patient is kept alive by constant attention and copious administration of nourishment and stimulants. Tie seems to have been crossing the Ashley, when his buggy was upset, and washed down the river. The horses were drowned, and himself saved only with difficulty. TWO MEN SMOTHERED. ; Dunedin, Wednesday. At daybreak on Saturday a man named Smith, and another miner, while working m a claim were smotnered by a fall of earth. Smith expired after being extricated, his neck Being broken. The other man had his leg broken. BURNED TO DEATH. LADIES-CAUGHT IN THE BUSH. Blenheim, Wednesday. Particulars arc to hand of a shocking death by burning at Queen Charlotte’s Sound, On Sunday last Mr Isaac Londcll, of Yattertou i nn, left hooie accompanied by his two daughters, They proceeded in a boat to Oyster Bay, where they were joined by a. young man named Flood. The men commenced sotting fire to the scrub, the two girls being a short distance. After firing for a short (line Londcll called the girls .to come where he was. A strong wind was blowing at the time, and the scrub was -burning ;ficrce!y. : In response' to the summons the eldest daughter only came, and the other was caught in the flames before she could escape, and was burned to death.
