PATEA MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1880. NEW WHARF.
We understand that plans arc in preparation in the Public Works Department at Wellington, for the construction of a river-side wharf in connection with the new Railway Station for Patea; The wharf is to have a frontage of 510 feet, and a fair working depth may be expected in proportion to the length. The Harbor Board was recently in communication with the Government respecting the ncccsssity for increased wharfage accommodation, to keep pace with the growing trade of the Patea river. No
official reply had been received at the Board’s meeting last Monday, but a .communication' was received yesterday which explains the long delay in Wellington. It now appears that, until the question of a Station’site had been definitely settled, the Public Works De-
partraent hesitated to authorise the construction of a now wharf on the town side of.thc rive l ’. The department has now authorised plans to be prepared for a large new wharf, to serve as a river frontage to the Railway Station, A '•iver-side platform of 180 yards will afford commodious space for working the river traffic at present. There is much room’for hoping, however, toat a wharf frontage of 180 yards w : ll not long serve the requirements of this growing poit.
