AMALGAMATION OF VOLUNTEERS.

On Tuesday evening a meeting of Nos. 1 and 2 Companies of Patca Rifles witS”” held at the Immigration Barracks, to sidcr the question of amalgamation. Mr Black was appointed to the chair ; and after some discussion, Mr Carey sen. proposed, and Air Dascnt seconded, That Nos. 1 and 2 Companies’ amalgamate.' In answer to Mr Jackson, Captain Black assnted the meeting that no part capitation grant would be lost through amalgamation. Air Carey’s proposal was, then carried unanimously. The next business being the election of officers, ihosc members willing to join the amalgamated company were asked to hand in their names to the chairman, and about 30 having complied, they then ballotted for officers, with the following, result;— Mr Tregenr to he Captain ; Mr W> Dale to be Lieutenant; and Mr Fraser, to be Sub-Lnietenaht. Mr King moved a vote of thanks to the retiring officers, Mr Haywood and Mr Chapman, for past services; this being cordially carried ; and Mr King’s own services to the corps were recognised in the Same manner. This question of amalgamating two weak companies into one strong one has been thus satisfactorily settled; Alt the former officers could. not be f re-elected, and of course a choice became inevitable. There were 39 on the roll up to last night, and probably the number will be 50 by Saturday, there being a number df promises. Patva may to.enjoy the inspiriting- racket of a brass band, so soon as a competent teacher can be obtained in the district. As to the arms, there will probably’ be sufficient Snider rifles, for the whole corps.

You might as well back a ihul* tip against a beehive and tell Min mot to kick, as tell a woman, abouut ft wedding—and expect silence.'' v ‘'“’
