WAVERLEY.
: [FROM OUR 1 CORRESPONDENT.] ! / ; Baciielder’s Combination is much siijio rior to the general average of such entertainments; The panorama is moderately good,-giving some idea of the overland American route ; but the views of Sydney and Auckland are hot up to the mark. The Ventriloquial part of the entertainment is worth the money charged for admittance ; while the evolutihns of the models on the trapeze are cleverly managed. The afterjiioon exhibition on Tuesday was well patronised by ; thp school children and others ; and on both evenings the Hall was well filled; ! Assessment Court.— Owing to some 'misunderstanding, there was no one present on Monday to hear objections to the present valuations .made by. the Town Board. .It was rather annoying to find that after losing a day to attend a Court, yon must lose another, or else pay as rated. Those who think rating ought to be strictly equal are the first to object on principle to any show of partiality, even where it results from an accident.
Petty Thefts. —It is to be regretted that complaints are being' made about the loss of saddles and.bridles from different homesteads. The Waverley folks will now need to lock their doors at night, and put what,is easily, moved as safely away as possible. This district has hitherto been very free from such troubles, but with a shifting population brought here by Railway works, one rogue among twenty honest men may casta slur on the whole, till ho is found out and exposed.
Mr Ballanck is to address his constituents in the Waverlcy Town Hall on Fridaj’ evening. There will no doubt be a large attendance, to hear his account of the past and his estimate of the future. WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD. The monthly meeting was hold at Waverley on Saturday. The Chairman pointed out the necessity of increasing the proposed rate, as 6d in the £ would be inadequate to meet expenses even of repairs foi the, current year, the general account being already overdrawn £175, and a sixpenny rate would barely bring in £3OO. Proposed by Mr McLean, seconded by Mr Johnston, that the rate book be made up for the current year at 9d in the £ for the period commencing June sth, 1880, and ending March 31st 1881, payable in one instalment on. June 7th, 1880; and that the rate book be open for inspection at the Board’s office during office hours. Amendment proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr lon, that the rate be Is in the £.
