CHARGE AGAINST A CONSTABLE. Auckland, Wednesday. Constable Abrahams was to-day charged ’ with indecently assaulting Catharine McDonald in the, hospital. The bench dismissed the case. RAIL WA Y A CCIDENT. ; The Points Tampered with. ; 1 Dunedin, Wednesday. A goods train from Palmerston to Dunedin ran off the line this morning. The engineer and fireman • escaped slightly ' bruised. The points had been tampered with, and the large American engine was 'broken in two, several hundred pounds damage being done. NOMINATIONS AT RANGITIKEI. THREE CANDIDATES. (special message.) Mnrton, Wednesday. Sir W. Fox, Mr S, Lyon and Mr Donald Fraser were nominated for the Rangitikei vacancy, to-day. Show of bands resulted thus Fox 39, Lyon 27, and Frasei 23. Lyon and Fraser met with a good reception and made interesting .speeches, but as Sir William Fox has been canvassing so long wjtbont opposition, the chances appear to be in bis favour, A poll was demanded, and will take place on Saturday next. ATTACKED BY A SHARK. ■ :Auckland, Wednesday. A son of; Captain Stevens, bathing at Auckland, bad a’ narrow escape from a shark. A young man jumped into the water and attacked the shark with a knife, and drove it away. LAND SETTLEMENTS in TARANAKI. Napier, Wednesday. Xiic Co-operative Land Company' have accepted the recommendation of the two delegates who have been inspecting land in the North Island, and will take up sections in Taranaki.
