NEW ZEALAND LITERATURE.

A monthly •“ Review” for New Zealand is projected. It is to be on the, pattern of the time-honored Home Reviews, but which of them ? There arc many kinds of literary monthlies issued frprn London as .'the centre of the Empire, and these varieties represent differences in taste ‘and in.culture among the reading public. A Review for this colony might serve a [purpose of great importance to our political progress, and might prove of not less usefulness as. a medium of that highest education which public men in inew Countries might aspire to with advantage. A colonial “monthly” seems to be needed for the expression,of opinion by the leading, minds of the colony on subjects which concern the public welfare. The famous “ Quarterly” and the once brilliant “ 'Edinburgh Quarterly” are read by Ministers of State, by scientific professors, by political economists, by physicians and divines, by various classes, pfthinlrevs and experimentalists. , Other Reviews aim at literature of alessspocu, latiye, and more practical kind ; while the lighter monthlies which deal chiefly in fiction and in adventure are simply magazine?, of light. reading. .. Each ,of these,has features which might be-com-bined judiciously in amcnthly magazine for.this colony. ; -The’ aim should not be too high/in; the sense of being abstruse or technical.
