The Tararua, with the San Francisco mails, did not get in till this morning. PRESS LIBEL CASE. Christchurch. Tuesday. The libel case Bracken v. Duvoll came on at the Supreme Court to-day. By a mistake, a common jury had assembled, whereas a special jury had been applied for ; and after legal argument, his Honor refused to try the case that day. and the record was withdrawn. Judge Johnston stigmatised the proceedings as a farce, and told the jury he was sorry he could not fix the blame. WHIPPINGS FOR RAPE. Auckland, Tuesday. Four prisoners convicted for rape or attempt, have been sentenced, one to ten years, and others to shorter terms, with whippings. DESERTING TE WHITI. Auckland, Tuesday. It is reported that Tawhiao and the King natives repudiate all responsibility for the actions of Tc Whiti, CATTLE PLAGUE. Auckland, Tuesday. Cambridge has been declared an infected distinct, owing to the spread of pluro-pneu-monia ; and cattle sold at Buckland’ssale last week have been killed by order from cattle board. HORSES KILLED BY LIGHTNING. Christchurch, Tuesday. Five horses belonging to Mr Sweeney, at Sheffield, have been killed by lightning. DESTROYING NORTH ISLAND FISH. Auckland, April 10. The mortality amongst fish along the coast is increasing. The theory that it is attributed to an eruption at White Island is doubted, because the fish are found at too great a distance. DENOUNCING MORMONS. Auckland, April 10. A copy of the Sail Lake Tribune received strongly denounces the Mormon Elders who visited New Zealand. It says one has been expelled, and Ire was first a Mason, next an Atheist, and last a fraud. THE COLONY’S REVENUE. Wellington, April 10. So far as can he gathered from particulars to hand, the revenue received during the financial year amounts to £2,107,000, being £278,000 less than the estimate. The expenditure was estimated at £3,100,000, in which case the deficit will amount to £930,000. REDUCING EXPENDITURE. Wellington, April 10. The Corporation last night determined to recommend a reduction of the salaries of officials, and to discharge a number of the Corporation laborers. A FEMALE HORSEWHIPPER. Christchurch, April 10. A sensation was created ' last night in Colombo-street, by a lady connected with the hairdressing interest severety horsewhipping an opposition gentleman in the same line, who is said to have maligned her character. At the termination of the castigation, the bystanders gave three cheers for the lady. EARTHQUAKE. Oamarn, April 10. Two heavy shocks of earthquake were felt here this morning. COAL REDUCTION. Wellington, April 12. The Newcastle miners have consented to a reduction in the gelling price of coal proposed by owners, and on and after today a reduction of 4s per ton wi'l be made in the price of coal at the pit’s month. The reduction will be made here early next month.
