HAWERA SCHOOL.
This following, being tho result of the examination of tbo above school, has been kindly forwarded to us for publication by Mr T. Middiemas, Chairman School Committee : The number of children present was 68 boys and 5S gills—l2l in all. The following names of children who passed in Standard I. are not given in the order of merit:—Lucy Ecclesfield, Sarah J. Cole, M. Clemoe, Rnth Lareome, Alice Larcomo, Elizabeth locker, Laura Tail, Emily looker, Rose Battler, Ruth Ferguson, Florence Prosser, Kate Prosser, Esther Ecclesfield, Jane Prosser, Bessie Smith, W. Adamson, Thomas Partridge, William Evans, David Syme, John McGcoch,Fred Livingstone, John Smith, James Noble, Isaac Williams, James Middiemas, James Wallace, Charles Evans, Andrew Lareome, John Secombo, Alfred Buttler, Thomas Cole, Andrew Smith. The arithmetic was excellent. Cut of 32 competitors, 25 wore right in all the sains submitted. The recitation is not surpassed by any school in the district. While all the children recited well, James Noble, Isaac Williams, Charles Evans, James Middiemas, Andrew Lareome, and Florence Prosser excelled. Alice Lareome and Esther Ecclesfield showed good hand-writing. Thomas Partridge and .John McGooch give promise of being good writers. Passed in Standard ll:—Kate Hobbs, Mary Middiemas, Elizabeth Middiemas, Mary .McFarland, Mary A. Tail, Alfred Tait, George Tait, James Henry, Harry Hobbs, John Buchanan, Charles Tait. James McFarland, Fred Harkness. Fred Long, Horace Baker. Ten out of fifteen cleared the arithmetic. The power of numeration was well understood. Harry Hobbs and James McFarland road very intelligently. Mary Middiemas excelled in writing. James Henry, Fred Harkness, Charles Tait, and Elizabeth Middiemas recited with good effect.
Passed in Standard lll,:—Annie Hobbs, Mary Syine, Isabella Smith. Annie Hobbs gives promise in drawing. The names of the children who passed in Standard IV. are placed in the order of merit, the available number of marks being 200. They are as follows :—Jane Middlemas, 193; Walter Syme, 180 ; Ellon Middlemas, 148; James Home, 146; Robert Middlemas, 144 ; George Hume, 139; Andrew Middlemas, 130. First in arithmetic, and in neatly executed papers, Jane Midd emas. Her map drawing and free hand drawing were very satisfactory. Ellen Middlemas made a good appearance in spelling and grammar. Walter Syme was the only one in this Standard who cleared
the arithmetical paper, but he lost a little in mental arithmetic. First in geography —Ellen Middlemas ami Walter Syme equal. First in history', George Home; second, Jane Middlemas and Walter Syme equal. First in reading, Jane Middlemas; second, Walter Syrne. James Home and R. Middlemas recited very pleasingly. Walter Syiue rendered a prose recitation admirably. In general, the map-drawing was very creditable. Ellen Middlemas showed fair specimens of her tree hand drawing.
Passed in Standard Vl.:—William Douglas, with 175 marks, out of an obtainable 200. His papers were neatly executed, and produced very creditable specimens of his map and free hand drawing. His rendering of a prose, recitation was very good. The school, in all respects, made a very good appearance, and reflected much credit upon the painstaking teachers— Mr A. Mair and Miss R. Williams.
