WAVERLEY.
(From our own Correspondent.) February I2 : . Below will be found the nominations for the Waverley Guineas at present to hand, and if the quality of the sires is any criterion, wo may expect to see a good race. There is a probability of another entry being received, as I am informed by Mr j. B. Since the annual meeting of the Public Library, tha committee (of which Mr F. P. Fookes is secretary) have collected about £4O towards- the funds, and they have decided to send' for a fresh supply of books. The library is now at Mr Fookes’ office, where the public may expect to receive every courtesy, and some good reading, as soon as the new books arrive. The Town Hal) is completed, excepting paint for the sides (which is to be done at once), and without wishing to' flatter the directors, I must say no better job could have been made with the same amount of money ; they are also to be congratulated on having secured Messrs McFarlane and Swinbourne as the cbatractors, as no one could have completed the work in a more creditable manner. I would give a detailed account of the ball, but such things are rather flat to the general public, and- as the hall is to be opened with a public ball on the 24th instant (under management of the directors), I would recommend all those who take an interest in such matters to attend, when they-may rely upon being well received. Notwithstanding the dull times, nearly the whole of the shares have been paid up. Relative to my remarks about the chairman of the Town Board having neglected to telegraph to Mr Bryce asking him to meet a deputation',- I am informed by that gentleman that be did "do so, and-re-’ ceived a reply from- Mr Bryce to the effect that he could not meet a deputation at
present. I. therefore apologise for having remarked on that gentleman’s action. My t remark was made in 'good faith, as my in-. formant hAd no knowledge that, a reply, had been,received-. . X,. -
IChe Roy al Cum mission-i has passed through Waverity, so we mny expect to see the natives on the Plains in about three months. lam afrAid the hotels in Normanby will do a little more trade for a white through tfie Government money, knd. they will be able to afford water for the Commissioner's horses out of the profits. Cattle pounding is the rage. The High* way Board have employed men to iittpOund all cattle, &c., found on the roads. Thik comes rather hard on the few straggling farmers around here, who are trying- to makeA living in these dull times. The members of the Board are men of means, 1 at least their homesteads are all fenced, so the regulation won't effect them ; but the man who is trying to make both ends meet, and cannot get hia place fenced, must suffer. Rather hard this, but I Suppose they must grin and bear itif wise, they would return different men next elebtion.
At the first Meeting of the new Highway Board, Mr Bridge was elected chairman, and they decided that their meetings shall be private. This evidently bears out the argument used at the last election—that meetings were private last term. So it will not bo possible; to .tell;.,what the Board is doing ; and I suppose.that, like the last, the Board will consist of a chairman.
