WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) January 12. As l ain given to understand that my remarks on the late fire at Mr Wiuchcomb’s [office have been construed as reflecting on Mr WinchemnV), I wish to slate the opposite was my intention. _ What I wanted to show was that the idea that

many have —titan an inquest conln imt. I>e held unless the building was insured, was entirely erroneous.

The Educational Committee mot ou the evening of the Sfb instant, when Messrs Mason (chairman), McDonald, Milne, Bridge, Thurston, and M at bicsoii were present. The mimiies of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed by Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr Thurston, ami carri-M. “Tint Mr I. I’. Fookes tin appointed auditor.”

Proposed by Mr Milne, seconded by Air Bridge, and carried, “That Mr Davis’ account, Ills, for cleaning school to December 3lsi. lie paid.” Proposed by Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr McDonald, ami carried, “That the. Local Committee desire to express their satislaetion at the progi ess tin; scholars have made in the six months Mr Scott has been teacher, and for the orderly manner in which all 'ho school nrranqcnicnls have been conducted ; and a's i for the cordial relationship which has existed between Mr Scott and themselves.”

The tiomlnitioii of candidates for Wardens of tiic Wairoa Highway Board was held in the old 'Town Tlaii to-day, Mr Fookes being Returning Ofiicor. when the following nominations were accepted ; No. 1 Ward. Proposed by Mr Lupton, and seconded by Mr Janies Cheyne, “That Mr Alexander Aiken be elected.” Proposed by Mr Lind, but not seconded, “ That Mr John Thurston be elected.” There being no other nomination, Mr Aiken was declared duly elected. No 2 Warp. For (Ids Ward, Mr John Hair was pro’ posed and seconded, but ho not being on the roll, was not eligible. Proposed by Mr Lupton, seconded bj' Mr Duncan McDonald, li That Mr George Johnston be elected.” Proposed by Mr Fleming, seconded by Air Sinclair, “ That Mr William Wilson be elected.” On the call for a show of hands, Air Johnston received three and Sir Wilson two, when Mr Wilson demanded a poll. No. 3 Ward. For this Ward Mr John lon was elected without opposition. No. 4 Ward. For this Ward there wore two candidates AJ.'S-srs A!e,-c.ir,WcT A-one. ai.c! -John McLean, the funner being proposed by Mr J. Sinclair, and seconded by .Mr Collins, tin* latter being proposed by Mr Keiiali, and seconded by Mr J. Johns!on. The show of hands gave four for cadi, when a pull was demanded by both candidate's. This was the only "Ward (hat caused any excitement. Mr Milne, when speaking, accused .Mr .McLean of making a hn of promises when lie was elected last election, which lie had not carried out. lie said Air .McLean had pledged himself to those who wanted a certain road made, that ho would get hj. done, and lo others who did not, want the same road made, that it should not bo done. Mr .Milne also stated that .Mr .McLean was mu, capable of superintending the work in his Ward, which had been arranged to tic done by the I3oird. Ho also accused him of spending about Tl,oiK) on the Kohi Bond, which did not lead to a third of tljo property in that Ward, and that onh' about W.3UO was spent in the other two-1 birds of the Ward, where there were roads as urgently required, Mr Milne also blamed the Board for not publishing the Balancesheet, and accused the Board for excluding the public from their meeting's. Mr Bridge denied this last charge, hut Mr Milne quoted a ease in which lie himself lead been Turned out by the Chairman. Mr Alii tie blamed the Board for getting a safe, and allowing the Chairman to keep it at his own private I'Ofa'idonee, while part of the books and papers of the Board wore kept, at the CFrk’s oflice, quite unprovided for ; hut Mr Bridge denied its being the Clerk’s office. No. 5 Warp. Proposed by Air John Dickie, seconded by Mr W. Dickie, “That Mr C. tS. Bridge be elected,” which was carried. The candidates for Nos. 1.3, and 5 Wards were, declared duly elected by the Returning Officer, and the poll for Nos. 2 and I Wards was appointed for Saturday next. With reference to my last letter, Mr Bridge: having explained that Air Winchcmub was not the Clerk to the Highway Board, and that Air Wiuchcomb’s office was not the office of the Board. I bog to withdraw the word “ indiscriminate” used therein. It is reported that Air Wilkie lias commenced the lino from Waitotara to Wavoricy. “ May Ids shadow never grow less.” The pound isbeing repaired, and I believe that one or two of our best riders arc anxiously waiting for orders to run them in. “ May their shadows grow much less.” The farmos arc busy with their hay and coni, but I believe that some of the wheat crops arc likely to turn out bad, as some of it appeal's to ripen too soon and dies oil, while Iho other remains green—the wby and the wherefore at present being a mystery. Some say it is a grub that gets .at the roots —hut not being an agriculturist myself, I cannot say. The Wanganui Chronicle takes exception to the modus opcrandl used by us in trying to get a J.P. for the township. Wo arc not like the Waugauuiites. We cannot, got a J.P. at every street corner, so 1 would like to ask the Wanganui Chronicle what steps it would take to got a J.P. appointed in the town of Wanganui, supposing there was not one resident within a radius of seven miles of; tins town. Further, would the Editor of the Chronicle like to travel fourteen miles there and hack to make an affidavit, or would lie do as we have clone, call a public meeting for the purpose of proving to the Government that what we ask for is a necessity.

I am told, but I won’t vouch for my authority, that it is intended to call a public mooting to,.sce if wc cannot get the telegraph hours cxt^ulcd.
