Mr De G. Fraser, who, at the last meeting of the Council, was instructed to inspect J. McLean’s contracts (Nos 12, 13, and 14), Mountain Load, sent in the following report :—“ According to instructions received, i have taken the levels of the Mountain Road from the Patea Bridge —4 miles and 9 chains—and placed pegs all along the eastern side of the road on contracts 14, 13, and 12. The plans forwarded by me show the position of these pegs, &c. The red lines denote the grades as laid down on original plans ; the black lines showing the present contour of the ground, and being the actual grades now existing. I may state that in many places the road is formed on one side of the centre line—thus, although in some instances the required cutting (by original plan) has not been done by many feet, yet the grade has been executed by keeping the line lower down the spurs. This only applies in some cases, as the plan will show what the grades are throughout.”
Applications of Messrs A. W. and G. Howie, J. Riscle}', A. Drake, and W. Treweek, for slaughter licenses, were granted. Mr Fortescue’s resignation as poundkeeper at Waverley was accepted, and Mr Ballam appointed in his stead. Most of the culverts have been thoroughly overhauled, and those still in a dangerous state will be repaired this month. Owing to the heavy floods in the Waingongoro, the gravelling on the Mountain Road, at Nonnanby, has not been carried on with the vigour which it would otherwise have been. Respecting this road, from the old school-house towards the town of Nonnanby, I would recommend that Mr Partridge’s suggestion be carried out —viz.; forming that portion of the road with one uniform cambre fiom centre of road to the side drains. I have employed a number of horses and drays repairing the road between Kakaramea and Carlyle. Waitotara dram is in progress, and will be finished in the course of a week.—G. Harden.
