WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) January 8. Mr Bridge’s letter of Saturday last cannot explain away the grave irregularity, if not impropriety, of having the Highway Board’s safe at his private residence, with the Highway Board’s papers lying indiscriminately in an uninsured office. Since writing my last I have heard that the Highway Board shifted their office to the late building, because they had got a safe, and were afraid of, fire breaking ont in the old quarters. The public wish to shelve the matter in presence of the forthcoming election on .Monday next, but I could not let Mr Bridge’s letter remain unanswered, as it implied an imputation bn the tmstworthyness of myself as your reporter, and I may state for Mr Bridge’s information that Mr Wincbcomb was my informant of the subject matter of my communication to which he takes exception. I understand that Mr Bridge intends running for the M. H.R.ship on the next general election; if so, I should ad vise . him . to order a set of double harness for himself and Sir George Grey. The annual meeting of the members arid adherents of the Presbyterian Church here, was held on Wednesday evening. There was a good atteridance,- and the whole proceedings spoke well of the energy and perseverance of the various officers connected with the Church. Mr McFarlane gave an account of the membership, Mr Howie spoke to the financial position

ami Mr McLeod addressed the meeting on Sunday school work. The members of the Financial Committee having been elected, the Rev Mr Ross, of Turakina, gave an able and interesting address on church work, dwelling on the advantage of Unanimity and concord in Church matters. Mr Allsworth, the minister, is to be congratulated in having so many connected with bis congregation able and willing t'o take part in Church matters.

Our Town. Hall is drawing near completion, and, although of a plain exterior, the Hall proper will compare favorably with any Hall in the Pa tea Colnity. It will bo a great boon to the public generally-, as there is no place here suitable either for lectures, theatricals, dr public meetings, so that every respectable company passes by, and no lectures or readings could be got up in the district for want of it suitable place in which fo hold such entertainments.
