WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) January 5. At the adjourned public meeting held at I p.m. on .Saturday last, for the purpose of nominating a gentleman for the ofliee of Justice of the Peace fm - the Township of Waverley, Messrs Bridge, Wim.-heomh, and Eunices were proposed for the ulliee, from which number Air Fookeswassclecterl by a Large majority. The meeting being held in the afternoon, after Mr Jackson’s sah', allowed of the whole of the district being represented, and the fact of Mr Fookes being elected by such a meeting should weigh with the Government, more especially its the leading set Hers of the district were present, at the meeting. Anxiety is being felt tit the laxity of the Government in not, gazetting the local Board. The rate for the ensuing year will have to be struck in a few days, and unless the members are, gazetted at, once, this cannot bo done. MionM um rim (mOim take some steps to ensure the gentlemen nominated being gazetted at once. A letter to the lion. Mr Bryce, signed by -one or two of the ratepayers, would be smiticient to bring the matter to his notice, when there is not the slightest doubt, that it would be attended to.

No inquest is to he held on tlu'j late fire

“ because the building was nob insured.” Rather strange fact. A large number of public records are destroyed, of far greater value than any insurance wuild possibly be. yet, because the building was not. insured, no inquest is to be held. This is the first lime I was aware that the fact of a building being insured was the sole cause of an inquest being held. The rate-book of the Highway Board has been burnt, notwithstanding that the Board have a fire-proof safe, which there is not the slightest doubt; was purchased out of the funds of the Board.

ft is reported t.hat the railway lino from Waitotara to W aver icy is to la* commenced at once, Mr Wilkie's tender having been accepted by the Government.
