WAVERLEY.

(From our own Correspondent.) December 29. Tse Waverley school was inspected by the Government Inspector (Mr Foulis) on Monday last; and the public inspection for the distribution of prizes (at which the parents of the children had been invited to attend) was held

iu tho New Town Hall- on Tuesday. A good many of the parents attended, but the weather, as usual lately, kept a large number of them away. Mr Scott, the master, examined the children on several subjects, in which the children acquitted themselves in a very creditable manner. There is no doubt that Mr Scott has taken great pains with the School during the time he has been in charge. He has had many difficulties to contend with, the greatest being that many of the pupils had been examined to pass a high standard ladt .year, when they were imperfect in the lower 'ones, the consequence being that Mr Sciott has'had to reclass the whole of tho School. The result bears proof of his judgment, as I believe that a great number of the 'scholars that passed high standards last year could not pass the lower ones this. The athletic sports as advertised were held on Boxing Day, and if the weather had been at all favorable, would have been a great success-; but notwithstanding that it rained the while of the time, from 12 o’clock till the finish, the programme •was gone through, with the exception of the egg and basket race. A few of the fair sex attended, but had to leave on account of the rain. At one time the committee thought of postponing the sports till New Year’s Day, but taking into consideration that most of the competitors for the large events were from Carlyle, at which place there are sports on that day, it was decided to carry out the programme notwithstanding the weather. The running was very good, most of the finishes being very close, especially the handicaps. The following is the programme : Judges—Messrs W. .Milne and D. McDonald. Starter—Mr J-. B. Taylor. The sports committee meet at Mr Ballam’s Hotel this evening, when most of the claims were paid, but the committee request that those gentlemen who put their names on the subscription list will pay up as Soon as possible, to enable them to liquidate all claims now due.
