HAWERA.

(from our own correspondent.) At the R.M Court on Thursday (before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.), the following cases were heard :—R. Keenan v P, Dowdell, claim £-1 10s for labor ; judgment for plaintiff for amount claimed, and 5s coats. —W. 11, Brightwell v S. Larcom, claim £7 for labor. Mr Barrington appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Barley man for defendant. It appears from evidence that plaintiff had entered into a contract with defendant to fell Ilk chains of bush, at 8s per chain. The work had not been commenced for some time after the contract was taken, and in the meantime defendant bad cleared 10 chains of the work let, himself, by mistake. Defendant also put in a set off against the claim for three day’s ploughing, at 15s per day (£2 ss), but it was proved to the satisfaction of the Court that the work might have been done in less time. Plaint ill; claimed for the whole of tuo chains, saying it was the original contract, but the Court considered he was to blame in not commencing the work sooner, when he would have been able to complete the whole. Judgment was given for plaintiff (loss the 10 chains done hy defendant, and set-oil; allowed, £1 2s Gd) for To 17s Gd and costs, and solicitors’ fee, £1 Is. —Guo drunk was lined 10 and costs.

A carbine match was fired on Thursday, between 10 men of the llawcra Light lior.se and 10 of the Taranaki Mounted Rifles, and, as will be soon by the scores, the flaw eras were again victorious. Tho conditions were ns follows :—Ten men aside; (lovermuent breach-bladingcarbines; target, G x 4; centre, 4 x 2; bails eye, 2 x 1. Range, 200, GOO, and 400 yards ; first i.ange standing, remainder any position ; 7 shots at each range. The weather was hardly what could be called a good shooting day, showers appearing occasionally; but on the whole the shooting of llawcra was very fair, the average being nearly [>7 per man. fcjcrgt.
