(To the Editor of the Path a Maii..)

Sm, —In the issue, of your paper of'the3rd instant, your Waverlcy correspondent has a paragraph commenting on the had engineering on the Cemetery Road, Waverley. He says he inspected the work done on that road lately, and found the cuttings all crocked. Having laid off and superintended the work done on the Cemetery Road lately, your correspondent would apparently like to throw the blame of these cuttings not being straight on to my shoulders, but i. 1 must decline to be responsible for other men's work. That the cuttings are not straight is quite correct.Your corresponent knows 1 belive that these cuttings were not originally laid off by me ; that they were laid off and made years ago ; and if I failed to make straight what other men made crooked, perhaps your correspondent will take for an excuse, not siifficont funds at my disposal. He complains of the roadway through No. 1 cutting being <>f a bow shape. Tins cutting is about 3 chains long, and a different grade at each end. By rounding off the shoulder at the termination of these grades, gave the roadway a bow-shaped appearance. An abrupt termination of a grade on a roadway is generally considered a bad feature in road construction. Your correspondent says the top of a rise lias been taken of, and the side of a hill filled in, which makes the grade steeper. There was 5 feet 10 inches deep of a cutting taken off the top of this hill, but how lie'makes out that the grade is made steeper by lowering the road on the top of the hill, is a puzzle to mo. 1 would recommend your correspondent to attend the meetings of the Hoad Board ; ho will then know what amount of money is voted for each separate piece of work. Having a knowledge of toad engineering, lie will know if the Board has voted sufficient funds to pay for making all the crooked places straight, and the rough places plain.—l run. &e.. WILSON .MILNE. Waverlcy, Dec. Bth, 1879.

{To the Editor of the I’atka Mail.)

Sin, —As I was coming up ihu Wlicnna" kniaHilt lust Tuesday, expecting to ge l * a drink for my thirsty st'-ed at the mual drinking place there, I was surprised to find that some ill-disposed person liad cut. a piece out of the front of the trough, also the lead into it. thereby rendering the well useless, as it was perfectly dry. As this place is such a bencht. to the tiavelling public, or at least to their cattle (for I ant sorry to say that many of them do not; forget to call tor their own drink wherever an opportunity occurs, and are not so mindful of the dnm animal they ride or drive, —unless they come across such a place as the above where its little ( rouble to them to let them qiihidi their thirst) instead of having it destroyed, more of them are wanted along onr roads. I hope our councillors will see into it, and not let such a place go to wreck.—l am. &c., TRAVELLER.
