CRICKET—CARLYLE v. HAWERA.

A MATCH between fifteen of the Carlyle and ten of the Hawera Clubs, was played on the ground of the former yesterday, commencing about ten o’clock. The weather was all that could be desired, and in the afternoon the ground was visited by a good number of spectators, including several of the fair sex. Play begun by Carlyle taking the willow, and out of the fifteen men they only succeeded in putting together 58 rune. Hawera followed, and fared worse still, as on the tenth wicket falling, their score only totted up to 55. No double figures were secured by Carlyle in the first innings ; and Foley, for Hawera, was tlie only roan on his side who managed a double. Had it not been for a dispute raised by Hawera as to the competency of the Carlyle umpiie (Mr R. Horner), the game would have passed off in a very pleasant manner ; but this appears to have upset the good feeling that previously existed, and it seemed at one time that play would have beensuspended altogether. We do not' think the Hawera team acted wisely in the course they pursued, for mistakes are very frequent even in the ga.no of cricket—in fact, not long- since we heard of Hawera winning a match wilh Wall.i pi.,. llu-ni-iffll o wrnncf decision Oil the part of their umpire. The position of umpire is a thankless one at the best of times, and the age .aid uprightness of the gentleman in question should have protected him from being subjected to such humilityashc wasyesterday, more especially as he has had large experience in cricketing. It seems to us a great pity that a game of cricket cannot be played without engendering such hitter feeling. Air S. Adamson acted as umpire for Hawera.

In the second innings, Carlyle only made 56, leaving Hawera 60 rims to win. At 5.30, the game stood thus ; Carlyle,
