The Chamber of Commerce of Dunedin has passed the following resolution, condoming the proposed Property Tax, which hay been forwarded by the .Secretary to the Dunedin members in the House ; —M}' instructions are to convey to vmi the following resolution passed by the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce ; Kcsulved —‘That, without expressing an opinion as to Lire propriety of putting on so suddenly such heavy taxation at a nine of such depression in the colony, tins Chamber is of opinion (Ist) That the proposed property tax would prove most objectionable to the community on account of its inquisitorial character, the difficulty in fairly obtaining, and the expensive machinery for its collection. (2) That the extra taxes required would be best obtained from the following sources, viz.,—On the tariff as proposed by Government, but deducting certain items on which the proposed rates are excessive—such as green fruit, preserved milk, &c., £250,000 ; previous rates on tea and sugar, £IOO,OUO ; present hind tax, £150.000 ; school ..fees, £120,900.
