ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

[Wjs are at all time-, ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in no case do wc hold ourselves responsible for the .sentiments of our correspondents.]

(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)

Sul —Whilst reading your paper yesterday, I wms much amused at an extract you have taken from theTaranaldiVewo', describing the visit of a young man named Mnnro to Te Wbiti, whom lie asked to return a sword which belonged to bis father, wdio was killed at Te Ngntu o Te Maim ; also that Te Whiti refused, and tho young man was quite dumfouiuled, owing, as the paiagraph says, to his not understanding the language in which ho was addressed. I think, Sir, that the News' correspondent has been misinfoimed, and the young man referred to must be myself. In the first place, I asked To Whiti for Major Von Tempsky’s sword, in fulfilment of a promise I had made to one ol tiiut gentleman’s family ; secondly, the name of Mimro is not unlike in sound to ‘‘ Manuraii," under which name the Major was known by the natives in this district ; and thirdly, there were no Europeans at Parihaka other than those of my party. In justice to myself, I was not refuse:], as I did not ask Te Whiti for the sword to be given me there and then, but simply for him to express himself favourably or othenvise, which he did greatly to my satisfaction. Again, I do not think I can be accused of being dumfoimded, or not understanding the language, when 1 sign myself JOSEPH E. DALTON, Licensed Interpreter. Normanby, Nov. '2Bth, 1813.
