There has been a great deal of talking in the House about the Government printing. In the first place, a return has been laid on the table of the amounts paid to each paper in the colony for advertising duiing last year. The late Government claim that the return completely clears them of the charges made against them of showing favour to their own supporters. In the next place, a long discussion took place on Hansard. This publication costs the colony, in all, about £6,000 per annum, and has a circulation of 220 copies besides those that arc given away. One conscienceless member proposed that each M.H.R, should receive, twenty copies instead of eight, as at present. We cannot see that there is any end served by giving Hansard away in this manner. Those who value it will not grudge 10s a year. There is a growing feeling against allowing members to correct, alter, and improve their speeches after they are printed. Tin's is not only costly but it robs the work of the only redeeming quality it is supposed to possess.
